Charlie
Edwards, christened Charmaine Louise Howard, has defended the right to be
called Charlie from the age of seven. She has resorted to the use of her fists,
feet, teeth and head to do so. Charlie is the second daughter and third child
of Laura and Colonel Andrew Howard of the Royal Artillery and one-time member
of the famed SAS. Being a soldier’s daughter means that Charlie is well able to
take care of herself. She has practiced for long hours at every known form of
unarmed combat with her father with an enthusiasm not displayed by Richard, her
elder brother or her sister, Charlene. Her father retired from the Army
several years ago. He is now a part-time Lecturer in ‘Interdiction, Sabotage, Escape
and Evasion’, known as ‘Icy’ among the regular army students at Sandhurst
Military College in Surrey. Her youth and teenage years have been spent living
in a large bungalow on the road to Wokingham. They enjoyed a large garden, a
tennis court, an indoor swimming pool, a pony and later a horse at the local
riding school. Charlie had a privileged upbringing among a caring and stable
family. She considers herself an extremely well-adjusted woman. At least she
did until recently, not now though.
